STOVE MAINTENANCE

Stove should be checked each campout to ensure there are no leaks. There can be a build-up of grease in the bottom of the stove, which if not cleaned out can cause the stove to catch on-fire.

To clean stove, raise the grate and remove the two (2) screws that hold the burners down. Remove the burners being careful not to drop them. There are stainless wafers and a metal ring on the bottom. Set these aside. Remove the aluminum pan and check the interior of the stove. Remove any build-up of grease and then use some type of detergent to remove the residue. Replace pan and burner plates. Use some type of anti-seize on the screws that hold the burner plates in place. This will ensure that the screws can be removed next time. If not the screws will twist off and the stove is un-useable

Gas values – on the front of the stove there are two plastic knobs with small phillips screws attaching them to the value. Being careful, remove the two screws and pull off the plastic knobs (open the gas values all the way before removing the knobs). Then remove to two brass nuts (7/16). Turn the stove upside down and remove the two tin nuts attaching the burners to the stove. Turn the stove right side up and remove the gas tubes and remove the gas value. At the end of each value there is a small nut (orifice) that needs to be removed. Using compressed air blow through the value to remove all oil buildup from the value side.

Propane has oil in it, that will build-up in the value and the stove will not heat to its capacity. Replace all parts in the order they were removed and then hook up a propane tank to the stove. (don’t over tighten the two small brass nuts that hold the gas value to the stove, but make sure they are snug. If not gas can leak around these nuts and cause the stove to catch fire).  Check for any leaks and then light the stove to ensure it works correctly. On the end of the value there should be a small o-rings to guard against leaks. Ensure that is present. If not, you can buy them at Lowe’s, Ace or Home Depot. There should also be a small o-ring on the end of the hose that connects to the tanks. This should also be present. These two o-rings are in place to help prevent any leakage of propane when the stove is in use.

We will have a stove-cleaning demo some night for all the Patrols quartermasters and those that want to attend.
